Semi-Solid Battery Energy Storage System Project for Black Start and Frequency Regulation of Gas Turbine Combined Cycle Units

Shenzhen Guangqian Electric Power Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Guangdong Energy Group, invested in and commissioned a 27.52 MWh semi-solid battery energy storage system at the Shenzhen Qianwan Power Plant in July 2024.

The system consists of eight 20-foot prefabricated containers, each designed for 3.35 MWh of energy storage using high-capacity 280 Ah semi-solid battery cells. Its liquid-cooled design and IP54 protection ensure stable and reliable operation across a wide temperature range from -30°C to 55°C and in varied humidity conditions, while the high-capacity cells and system configuration support robust performance and safe operation under demanding industrial conditions.

The energy storage system is deeply integrated with the gas turbine units of Qianwan Power Plant and works in close coordination with them. In the event of a total grid outage, the storage system can start first, supplying stored power to critical equipment such as the turbines and control systems.

Once the plant resumes generation, it gradually supplies power to the surrounding grid, ultimately restoring the regional network. This capability significantly enhances grid emergency recovery and serves as a critical safeguard for power supply in key areas.

Furthermore, the system provides rapid frequency regulation. When electricity demand suddenly rises or falls, causing grid frequency fluctuations, the storage system can instantly discharge to fill power deficits or absorb excess power.

By coordinating with the gas turbines for frequency regulation, it improves operational flexibility, allowing the plant not only to generate electricity but also to act as a fast-responding grid stabilizer, while generating additional economic benefits through frequency regulation services.
